Lights For Learning

The Century College Foundation's annual Lights for Learning campaign lessens the burden for students who are struggling financially and rewards students who excel academically.

Funds raised support many causes, including student scholarships and Random Acts of Kindness grants. By offering scholarship opportunities, we hope to encourage more students to attend college. The Lights for Learning Campaign is divided into two components: the Employee Campaign and the Friends of Century College Campaign.

How students benefit from the Lights for Learning Campaign

During the 2007-2008 academic year, the Century College Foundation awarded $112,950 in scholarships to 92 students. The Foundation also continues to award students with extreme financial difficulty throughout the year with grants from the Random Acts of Kindness program.

Many of our students must drop out of school due to financial hardship, so they are extremely grateful for the scholarship money that they receive.

Please help the Foundation award more scholarships to enable deserving students to achieve their dream of obtaining a college education.

Student Testimonials

To demonstrate how much your contributions are appreciated, here are some thank-you note excerpts from students who received scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year:

“The unique experience I have received at Century will positively impact the rest of my educational career. Completing a college education is a great achievement and Century College Foundation donors have made these aspirations a reality for many students. I already know that one day I will make a difference; this scholarship is bringing me one step closer” – Lauren

“Getting this scholarship has changed my life quite dramatically. It not only has helped me to be able to continue going to school, but it has also made my stress level of being in a financial crisis decrease quite significantly. I can actually focus on my education instead of worrying about how I'm going to be able to pay for it. This scholarship was a dream come true, and I'm eternally grateful for the honor” – Courtney

“Thank you so much for selecting me as recipient of the Mathematics Scholarship. Being recognized for my mathemetical achievement has invigorated me to pursue even greater academic success. Not only will I have more time to study my class subjects, I'll also have the confidence to triumph in them as well because of your support.” – Michael

“To begin with, the scholarship made a difference in my life the day it arrived home...Imagine your day is going terrible...things are going from bad to worse...you get home and wonder how you're doing to pay for college. Suddenly, your mom steps in the room waving a letter at you and says, "You got a scholarship for one thousand dollars!" Suddenly, a heavy burden is lifted off your shoulders. Things aren't as bad, in fact, they're getting better.” – Bakhari

Employee Campaign

Employee contributions are an important part of the Century College Foundation's Lights for Learning annual giving campaign. Please join your fellow employees in making a contribution to this year’s Lights for Learning campaign. This year, our goal is to have 100 percent employee participation. One-hundred percent of your contribution will be designated to the fund of your choice. Your past support has changed lives and we welcome your support again this year.

Friends of Century College Campaign

Dear Friends of Century College,

This year marks the twelfth annual appeal for the “Lights for Learning” Campaign. Over the past 11 years, we have helped hundreds of students. There are so many more, however who still need our help to make their dreams a reality. It is a tremendous challenge, but it is also a noble effort.

We hope that you know how much we appreciate the assistance that you have provided in the past. Students continue to choose Century College -- the largest community and technical college in Minnesota. The word is out that Century has quality faculty and staff who care about student success. The Century College community is a great community filled with good-hearted and generous people. And so we come to you again this year with our request.

Our rapid enrollment growth has stretched our facilities to the limit. To meet the demand for more classrooms and more general space, we recently opened a $4.9 million Technology Center. In the 2006 legislative session, we received funding for a new $19.9 million science/learning resource center on East Campus. In the 2008 legislative session, we will be seeking funding for the $7.0 million renovation of the space, vacated in 2007-2008 by the library and science center.

While we may be successful in securing funding for the bricks and mortar, we still need your help for students, who face many potential barriers such as balancing work and school, caring for children, and gaining necessary writing, reading, and math skills. Tuition continues to rise to record high levels for two-year colleges. For some students, all it takes is one financial crisis to derail their college goals.

We are here to help our students. This year our campaign goal is to raise $250,000, which will demonstrate our support for the potential of our students. Every contribution, no matter what the amount, will enhance our community and change lives. We invite you to review the enclosed materials to see how donations to the Lights for Learning campaign have made a difference in the lives of our students and how you can continue to help. Together we can make a difference!

Best wishes,

Dr. Larry Litecky, College President
