Program description
Geography offers a fascinating realm of knowledge that can enrich our lives.
National Geographic Society
Geography asks you to look at the world and try to make sense of it.
Pierce Lewis
Geography is a broad discipline encompassing both the physical and social sciences including:
- Physical geography is the study of our dynamic planet (delete - Earth works) - its global systems of air, water, land, and life.
- Human geography is the study of "Earth as the home of people": how human groups adapt to and modify their environments, and how the world is organized culturally, politically, and economically.
- Technical geography involves the use of advanced tools such as remote sensing (e.g. satellite images), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to study the earth and solve problems.
Courses incorporate lecture and discussion, theory with real world exercises and examples, and content and skill learning.
We all carry an innate curiosity about the world surrounding us (Delete - and how it works), so it is rarely difficult to engage students in geography. Because our world is so dynamic and ever changing, we strive to keep our geography curriculum timely, pertinent, and diverse. Our goal is to create classroom environments that offer a variety of interactive activities and methods conducive to student interest and significant learning.
Students from Century can go onto further coursework and degrees in the discipline at several metro and regional colleges and universities.
