Marketing

Program description

The Marketing Program at Century College introduces you to the challenging, dynamic field of marketing. Whether you're interested in retail management, professional sales, advertising copywriting, sales promotion, special event production, store planning or merchandise presentation, there's a course for you.

Often we're preparing you for jobs that don't even exist yet. That's the challenge, and the beauty of marketing. It's an exciting field where you're often paid for never doing the same thing twice — or at least the same way twice.

To succeed in marketing, you need to be a well-rounded individual with lots of, well, marketable marketing skills. You need to be something of a reader and a researcher, a writer, a speaker, a communicator, a negotiator, a desktop publisher, a team leader, a team member, an innovator, a creative thinker, a workaholic, and an idea generator.

If you don't immediately recognize your current self from these descriptors, don't worry. Many of these characteristics and skills can be acquired in your two years at Century. That's because we're dedicated to helping you prepare for and succeed in the workplace.

Program points of pride

We're proud that our instructors are also connected to the marketing industry – either as consultants, freelancers, or recent practitioners. They often bring their professional colleagues to campus as guest speakers and resources for the classes they teach each semester.

We're equally proud that our instructors are actively involved in campus life, serving on important committees like the Academic Affairs and Standards Council and the Century College Marketing Committee. We’re also involved in a dynamic program called Teaching Circles, either as members or group facilitators. Teaching Circles are gatherings of instructors who want to learn more about their profession – primarily how to be better, more effective teachers so that our students can be successful.

We're delighted that the college marketing department (not our instructional program, but the professionals who advertise and promote the Century brand in its target markets) often visits our classes to gather student opinion and other vital marketing information from the all-important “consumer” point of view. One of our current students serves as the student representative to the Century web page redesign committee, and another is featured on the cover of our fall course schedule!

One of our instructors is the co-author of a book that has become the national standard for college visual merchandising courses and is now working on a text for special event production. Another of us has become an influential leader in taking the concept of the Teaching Circle to its next phase of development on a regional and even national basis.

Transfer curriculum

If a two-year degree doesn’t feel like enough preparation for you, don’t panic. Although the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree was not originally designed to transfer to a four-year college, Metropolitan State University has initiated a four-year Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree that accepts both the Century College Marketing A.A.S. and Marketing Communications Technology A.A.S. degrees in transfer so that you enter Metro State as a junior. In fact, they’d like to teach several of the third- and fourth-year courses on Century’s campus. If that works out, you may be able to earn most, if not all, of your B.A.S. right here at Century.

Other students have successfully transferred to four-year colleges in the area with most of their marketing credits in tact. If credits don’t transfer directly to their major field, they often transfer as electives. All 20 MNTC “generals” transfer. We recommend that you discuss transfer with your intended four-year school early in your studies at Century so that you have a clear picture of what will transfer and how it will transfer.

Flexible learning options

Marketing courses are often offered online and in the evening. Our current goal is to offer the entire Marketing A.A.S. degree online, and we are currently looking to hire a full-time instructor who will help us plan for that and ensure that it happens. Stay tuned for further developments in that area.
